A man in federal prison stabbed former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin 22 times. The attacker, John Turscak, planned the assault for a month, targeting Chauvin because of his high-profile status.

Chauvin, known for the murder of George Floyd, was seriously injured in the attack at Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, last week.

Turscak now faces charges of attempted murder and assault. He explained to prosecutors that he chose the day after Thanksgiving, known as “Black Friday,” to symbolize the Black Lives Matter movement.

Chauvin’s actions in Floyd’s death had sparked protests against police brutality and racism worldwide. Turscak admitted he would have killed Chauvin if not for a quick response from prison staff. Chauvin is currently serving a 22 1/2-year sentence for Floyd’s murder.
