Warren County, Ohio – In a worrying development, the Warren County Health District (WCHD) is grappling with a significant uptick in pediatric pneumonia cases this fall season, prompting concerns about a potential outbreak. Since August, an alarming 142 cases of pediatric pneumonia have been reported, surpassing the county average and meeting the Ohio Department of Health’s definition of an outbreak.

While health officials do not suspect a novel respiratory disease, the surge represents a substantial increase in pneumonia cases for this time of year. An ongoing investigation seeks to identify commonalities and risk factors among the cases. The affected children, with an average age of around 8 years old, hail from multiple school districts, and as of now, no conclusive patterns have emerged.

Symptoms reported in the majority of cases, according to a recent parent questionnaire, include cough, fever, and fatigue. Pathogens recovered from diagnosed cases include Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Adenovirus.

Collaborating with the Ohio Department of Health, local children’s hospitals, and primary care providers, WCHD aims to determine the cause of the surge and implement measures to prevent further spread. As part of the response, healthcare providers are urged to have a lower threshold for testing children presenting with cough, fever, and/or fatigue, and consider nasopharyngeal swabs for respiratory viruses, Mycoplasma, and pertussis.

Last week, WCHD issued a notification to Warren County providers, providing education and clarification on the nature of the outbreak. The public is advised to remain vigilant as the holiday season approaches, with a reminder to practice essential precautions such as handwashing, covering coughs, staying home when ill, and ensuring up-to-date vaccinations.

For questions or to report a pneumonia case, individuals are encouraged to contact the Warren County Health District at 513-695-2097.
