US: Murder Suspect on the Run After Brazen Escape, Pepper-Spraying Deputy
Gretna, LA – A manhunt is underway in Louisiana after a daring escape by an inmate facing a second-degree murder charge. Leon Ruffin, 51, allegedly pepper-sprayed a deputy and stole her marked patrol car on Sunday evening while being transported back to the Jefferson Parish jail from a New Orleans hospital.
Escape from Medical Transport:
Ruffin had been taken to Ochsner Medical Center earlier that day for treatment of a seizure. Authorities suspect he may have feigned the medical condition as part of his escape plan. Around 6:40 p.m., after receiving medical attention, he was being returned to jail by a deputy.
Violent Escape:
Before leaving the hospital parking lot, Ruffin reportedly created a disturbance that prompted the deputy to exit the vehicle. He then seized the opportunity, pepper-spraying the deputy and stealing the marked Ford Explorer. The deputy fired three shots towards the fleeing vehicle, but it is unknown if Ruffin was hit.
Investigation and Search:
The stolen vehicle was later located abandoned in Algiers, New Orleans. The deputy received treatment for the pepper spray and is recovering. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto assured the public that “everything possible is being done” to locate and apprehend Ruffin.
