In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported alarming conditions in Gaza, with nearly 20,000 births recorded since the widespread Israeli bombardment began. The conflict has resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of around 250 hostages, further exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.

Challenges in Maternal Care: Chronic aid access issues have led to harrowing situations for mothers in Gaza. Caesarean sections are reportedly being performed without anesthesia, while overwhelmed medical staff struggle to address the needs of pregnant women and those delivering stillborn babies.

UNICEF Communications Specialist Tess Ingram highlighted the immense challenges faced by mothers in accessing medical care, nutrition, and protection throughout the childbirth process. She emphasized the grim reality that, for many in Gaza, giving birth has become synonymous with delivering a child into a distressing environment.

Deteriorating Health Conditions: The UN World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed deep concern about the spread of hepatitis A in Gaza due to inhumane living conditions. Limited access to clean water, proper sanitation, and overcrowded shelters pose a significant threat to public health, leading to the rapid transmission of diseases.

WHO data reveals alarming statistics, with an average of 500 people sharing one toilet and over 2,000 people having to use a single shower, significantly increasing the risk of disease transmission. Upper respiratory infections and a 26-fold increase in diarrhoea cases among children under five in the last three months of 2023 further underscore the gravity of the health crisis.

Overwhelmed Medical Infrastructure: The constant bombardment and displacement have severely impacted Gaza’s medical facilities. WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic highlighted the urgent need for medical assistance, citing the depletion of resources at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. The facility now operates with only two doctors in its emergency department, down from 24 before the conflict, and a reduced number of intensive care beds and nurses.

Relief Efforts and Urgent Needs: UNICEF has been working to provide essential support to vulnerable women and children in Gaza, delivering milk formula, supplements for mothers unable to breastfeed, and medical supplies for overstretched healthcare teams. However, the scale of the crisis demands much more extensive assistance.

UNICEF Communications Specialist Tess Ingram, reporting from Amman, Jordan, stressed the critical need for immediate action to address the overwhelming challenges faced by mothers and newborns in Gaza. Malnutrition, developmental issues, and other health complications are on the rise, directly linked to the ongoing conflict.

Humanitarian Appeal: As the conflict’s deadly toll nears 25,000, with 70% believed to be women and children, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) expressed profound concern. Access restrictions imposed by Israel on critical equipment imports continue to impede relief missions in Gaza, exacerbating the overall response challenges.

Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, described the situation as a massive human rights crisis and a human-made humanitarian disaster. Urgent scaling up of humanitarian aid, particularly in terms of protection response, is essential to address the dire conditions in Gaza.

As displaced people continue to arrive in Rafah, the need for international assistance becomes increasingly urgent. The OHCHR stressed the importance of addressing the shortage of resources, pervasive fear, and anger, emphasizing the necessity for immediate humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.

The international community faces a race against time to mitigate the unprecedented humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, with urgent calls for a ceasefire intensifying.
