Tragic Fire Claims 17 Lives at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, Kenya
A tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy, a primary boarding school in Nyeri, central Kenya, has resulted in the deaths of 17 students and injuries to 14 others, as confirmed by police spokeswoman Resila Onyango on Friday. The incident has prompted President William Ruto to call for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
The fire, which reportedly burned the victims beyond recognition, broke out in the early hours, leading to a swift emergency response. Rescuers are continuing to arrive at the scene to assist in the aftermath of the blaze, with more details expected to be released by authorities shortly.
In a statement on his X account, President Ruto expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for a comprehensive inquiry into the “horrific incident.” He stated, “I instruct relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident. Those responsible will be held to account.”
The school has been cordoned off by authorities, including personnel from the Kenya Red Cross, who are assisting in the emergency response. The fire adds to a worrying trend of school fires in Kenya, many of which have been linked to arson.
Previous incidents include a fire in September 2017 in Nairobi that claimed the lives of nine students, and a devastating dormitory fire at Kyanguli Secondary School in 2001, which killed 58 boys. More recently, in 2012, eight students died in a school fire in Homa Bay County.
As investigations begin, the community mourns the loss of young lives and calls for enhanced safety measures in educational institutions across the country.
