Surgical Scissor Left in Woman’s Abdomen Removed by Doctors After 12 Years
Gangtok: Doctors at STNM Hospital successfully removed a surgical scissor from a woman’s abdomen after it was accidentally left inside during an appendix surgery 12 years ago, according to an official statement on Saturday.
The patient, who had undergone an appendectomy at the same hospital over a decade ago, continued to experience persistent abdominal pain. Her family recently brought her back to the hospital, where an X-ray revealed the presence of a surgical scissor that had been left behind during her previous surgery.
Dr. Suresh Madan Rai, the hospital’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident and mentioned that a specialized medical committee, comprising officials from the Health Department and STNM doctors, has been established to thoroughly investigate how the surgical instrument was overlooked during the original procedure.
The medical team operated on the woman last Thursday to remove the scissor. The hospital is taking steps to review the case and implement measures to prevent such errors in the future. The patient is reportedly recovering after the successful operation.
