South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, renowned for his role in “Parasite,” has died at 48 amid an investigation into alleged illegal drug use, with police indicating suicide as the presumed cause.

Lee was found in his car in Seoul after a missing person report from his manager. He had been questioned three times since October for drug use, claiming he was tricked and blackmailed.

Despite negative drug test results, Lee faced ongoing investigations. Two individuals were arrested, and Lee requested a polygraph examination. South Korea, known for strict drug laws, imposes severe penalties for drug-related offenses.

Lee’s family declined an autopsy. The funeral will be private. Drug scandals have previously impacted South Korean celebrities, leading to career setbacks. In October 2022, the government announced a cooperation system to address rising drug issues.

President Yoon Suk Yeol has emphasized a comprehensive government approach in the war on drugs. Lee, acclaimed for roles in various TV series and “Parasite,” leaves a notable legacy in South Korean entertainment.
