Shooting Near Israeli Consulate in Munich: Austrian National Killed by Police
German police shot and killed an 18-year-old Austrian national near the Israeli Consulate in Munich on Thursday. Officers exchanged fire with the individual, who was carrying a “long gun” near Karolinenplatz around 9 a.m. local time. The suspect was seriously wounded in the exchange and later pronounced dead. Authorities are still investigating the motive, with no other suspects involved.
The incident occurred near a museum dedicated to Munich’s Nazi-era history and coincided with the 52nd anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack, though no connection has been confirmed. The Israeli Consulate was closed at the time, and no staff members were harmed.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann confirmed the suspect’s death, and police heightened security across the city, though they reported no other incidents. Israel’s Foreign Ministry later clarified that the consulate remained unaffected by the situation.
