Royal Navy Officer Dies After Helicopter Crash in English Channel

A Royal Navy service member tragically lost their life after a Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed into the English Channel during night training exercises off the Dorset coast. The incident occurred while the helicopter was participating in night flying drills with HMS Queen Elizabeth. According to the Royal Navy, the deceased’s family has been notified, but their identity has not been made public. Fortunately, the other two crew members onboard the helicopter were rescued and sustained no serious injuries.

Defence Secretary John Healey expressed his condolences during a visit to HMS Diamond in Portsmouth, stating: “This is incredibly sad news. It’s the kind of tragedy everyone in our armed forces dreads. My thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.” He confirmed a thorough investigation into the incident has already begun.

Admiral Sir Ben Key, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, also shared his grief, saying, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our personnel, and our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time.”
