Prohibitory Orders Imposed in Nagamangala Following Clash During Ganesha Procession
Nagamangala, Mandya: Tensions flared in Nagamangala town, Mandya district, on Wednesday night, leading to the imposition of prohibitory orders after stone pelting incidents during a Ganesha idol immersion procession resulted in injuries, including a police officer. The violence occurred near a dargah on Mysuru Road, prompting police to resort to lathi charge in order to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The incident unfolded when youths from Badarikoppalu village were conducting the Ganesha idol immersion procession. A heated exchange reportedly broke out between two groups of different faiths over the procession’s route along Mysuru Road. Allegedly, some youths belonging to a different faith resorted to throwing stones at the procession, with reports suggesting that a few individuals brandished weapons.
In response, enraged Hindu youths placed the Ganesha idol in front of the local police station, staging a protest and demanding action. The situation escalated as hundreds of Hindu youths gathered at the scene, calling for permission to continue the procession along Mysuru Road.
The unrest spread, with a group setting fire to several shops and burning tyres in protest. Fire and Emergency Services quickly intervened, extinguishing the flames before they could cause further damage.
High-ranking police officials have been stationed in Nagamangala, with additional forces deployed as a preventive measure to maintain peace in the town.
