After weeks of speculation about the cause of former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams’ death, officials have officially disclosed the cause of his demise while acknowledging the possibility of contributing factors.

Initially reported on September 5 as an accidental head injury at a construction site, the circumstances surrounding Williams’ death took an unexpected turn. The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department revealed that the ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, who passed away on September 12 at 36, succumbed to “Bacterial Sepsis with Cerebral Abscesses and Necrotizing Lobar Pneumonia due to multiple Dental Caries and retained tooth roots.”

Williams suffered severe dental problems that led to infections, resulting in pus around his brain. Initial tests indicated brain swelling and infections, exacerbated by heart disease, contributing to a cardiac arrest after the construction accident on September 1.

Selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Williams made an impactful debut season, leading the team in receiving yards with 964 and scoring 11 touchdowns. Despite signing a substantial extension in 2013, his career faced setbacks due to injuries, leading to a trade to the Buffalo Bills in 2014. Williams, known for his early success, struggled to reach the same heights, with his highest season receiving yards at 996 in 2012.
