Modi Govt Approves Health Coverage for Senior Citizens Above 70 Under Ayushman Bharat
In a significant policy shift, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday extended health insurance coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their income, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This decision, announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is set to benefit 45 million families across the country.
Following the Cabinet meeting, Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of this move, stating, “Our senior citizens over the age of 70 will now be included in universal health coverage under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY. This is a landmark decision aimed at improving healthcare access for the elderly.”
The initiative will provide free health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh to approximately six crore senior citizens. Additionally, the government plans to issue a separate, distinct card to eligible beneficiaries under the scheme for easy access to these benefits.
