Mid-Atlantic Soaked: Pennsylvania and Delaware Set New Rainfall Benchmarks
Heavy rainfall overnight and into Thursday morning shattered daily records in parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Philadelphia, New York, and New Haven experienced continuous heavy rain, preventing widespread flooding but causing localized flash flooding in some areas.
In the mid-Atlantic states, including Allentown, Pennsylvania, several locations witnessed the breaking of daily rainfall records on Wednesday. Allentown received 2.05 inches, surpassing the 1930 record of 1.55 inches. Mt. Pocono and Reading in Pennsylvania also broke or tied their records for daily rainfall.
Wilmington, Delaware, set a new daily rainfall record at 1.84 inches, surpassing the previous record of 1.76 inches set in 1930.
As Thursday morning unfolded, rain continued to sweep across New England states such as Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. The forecast predicted an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain throughout the day.
