Microfinance Pioneer Muhammad Yunus to Lead Bangladesh’s Interim Govt

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh’s political landscape has been reshaped following weeks of intense protests. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed to lead an interim government after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forced resignation.

The crisis, sparked by student-led demonstrations against job quotas, resulted in over 400 fatalities and culminated in the military’s intervention. Hasina, facing an ultimatum, fled to India, while her political rival Khaleda Zia was released from house arrest.

Amidst the turmoil, concerns have arisen over the safety of minorities, with reports of vandalism targeting Hindu communities. The Bangladesh Army has undergone significant reshuffling, including changes in leadership of the Rapid Action Battalion.

India, meanwhile, has granted Hasina temporary refuge and is closely monitoring the situation. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has engaged with various stakeholders, emphasizing India’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its nationals and minorities in Bangladesh.
