Mexico: Tragic Collision in Zacatecas: 24 Dead as Bus Overturns After Hitting Detached Trailer
In a tragic highway accident early Saturday, a passenger bus collided with a tractor-trailer in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, resulting in 24 fatalities and leaving five others injured, according to local authorities.
The incident took place when the trailer, loaded with corn, detached from the truck, causing the bus to overturn onto its side, explained National Guard coordinator Juan Manriquez. The bus was en route from Tepic, Nayarit, heading toward Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua, as confirmed by Zacatecas’ Secretary General Rodrigo Reyes. In a video message, Reyes advised travelers to avoid the affected highway, which has been temporarily closed for investigation and cleanup.
The injured passengers are being treated at a nearby facility of the Mexican Social Security Institute. Offering his condolences, Reyes expressed, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families mourning their loved ones in this unfortunate accident.” He also mentioned that Zacatecas Governor David Monreal has directed the State Victims’ Assistance Commission to provide support for those affected.
Traffic incidents remain a significant safety concern in Mexico. In 2023 alone, over 381,000 accidents occurred in urban and suburban zones, leading to more than 4,800 deaths and 90,500 injuries, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico.
