UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent Diwali celebration at 10 Downing Street has sparked controversy among some British Hindus, following reports that the event’s dinner menu included meat and alcohol. The gathering, attended by community leaders and key politicians, featured traditional Diwali elements such as lighting diyas, a Kuchipudi dance performance, and a speech from the Prime Minister. However, news that lamb kebabs, wine, and beer were served left some attendees disappointed, noting that these items are generally avoided during the festival.

Prominent Hindu leader Satish K Sharma voiced his dismay, highlighting the departure from previous years’ practices, which excluded meat and alcohol. “For around 14 years, Diwali celebrations at 10 Downing Street have refrained from serving non-vegetarian dishes and liquor. This year’s event, dominated by alcohol and meat, was a serious misstep, revealing a lack of understanding on the part of the Prime Minister’s advisors,” Sharma expressed in a video posted to X. He further called for a statement from Starmer, questioning whether the menu choices were accidental or intentional.

Insight UK, a Hindu and Indian advocacy group, also reacted, describing the inclusion of meat and alcohol as disrespectful to the religious nature of Diwali. They offered their guidance to 10 Downing Street officials to ensure future events better reflect religious sensitivities. “This sacred celebration was overshadowed by choices that failed to respect Diwali traditions,” Insight UK said in an online post, calling for more awareness in planning future gatherings.
