Massive Fire Engulfs Christchurch’s Port Hills: Evacuations Underway

Emergency crews from Fire and Emergency New Zealand are currently engaged in combatting a sizable fire on the Port Hills in Christchurch, deploying 10 helicopters and 15 crews to contain the spreading blaze.

Amidst the escalating situation, evacuations are underway, affecting the Princess Margaret Hospital and residences in the vicinity. Authorities have issued a directive for all residents of Worselys Road and Worsleys Spur to evacuate immediately.

To assist those displaced, an evacuation center has been established at Halswell Library and Community Centre.

A spokesperson from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) reported that 15 trucks and tankers are actively involved in the firefighting efforts against the Port Hills fire. Concurrently, Te Whatu Ora National Public Health Service has released a public health advisory concerning the smoke generated by the fire.

The air in the affected area is reported to be smoky, raising concerns for individuals sensitive to smoke, including those with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women, young children, and the elderly. Symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat may be experienced.
