Zhuhai, China: A man drove his car into a group of people exercising at a sports complex in Southern China on Monday night, killing 35 and injuring 43 others, according to the police. The man, 62 years old, was upset about his divorce settlement and is believed to have inflicted injuries on himself after the attack. He was arrested shortly after the incident.
The attack took place at a sports facility used by locals for running, playing soccer, and dancing. Videos of the scene circulated on social media, showing people lying on the track, with one video showing a woman saying, “my foot is broken,” while a firefighter performed CPR on someone nearby.
This incident adds to a troubling series of random attacks in China, including a knife attack on children at a school in Beijing in October and another deadly attack in a Shanghai supermarket in September. Police believe the man’s anger over his divorce led to the violent act.
The Chinese government has been carefully controlling information about the incident. Social media posts and news articles about the attack were quickly removed, and details about the event were hard to find for several hours. Chinese President Xi Jinping condemned the attack and called for strict punishment for the attacker. He also urged local authorities to prevent similar incidents and address conflicts before they escalate.
