New Delhi: Following a tweet by a Maldives minister criticizing India, a social media uproar has erupted, with numerous Indians claiming to have canceled their planned holidays to the island nation, just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Lakshadweep archipelago.

The controversy originated from the Maldives minister’s tweet, alleging that India is targeting the nation and emphasizing the challenges India faces in competing with the Maldives in beach tourism.

Many individuals have shared purported screenshots of their cancelled air travel and hotel bookings on social media platforms. Additionally, ‘#BoycottMaldives’ has become one of the top trends on various platforms in India. Diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives have escalated in recent months, particularly since President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in November last year. The new president has hinted at a shift in foreign policy, indicating closer ties with China and a departure from the previous “India first” approach.
