Law Amendment to Safeguard Medical Staff Awaiting Governor’s Approval: Dinesh Gundu Rao
Mangaluru: Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that a new amendment to the law aimed at safeguarding medical professionals is pending the Governor’s approval.
Addressing reporters in Mangaluru on Saturday, Rao highlighted the medical student murder case in Kolkata, which has raised alarm and anxiety among healthcare workers. He noted that doctors and medical staff, including female personnel, often work long hours, including through the night.
The proposed amendment seeks to offer enhanced protection to doctors, nurses, and medical staff. Under the new provisions, any form of abuse, insult, or the posting of videos targeting medical professionals on social media will be deemed a criminal offense. Rao emphasized that ensuring safety is a collective responsibility of hospital administrators and the government.
To address these issues, Rao has scheduled a meeting with doctors and hospital owners for Tuesday to discuss measures to enhance safety.
Regarding the ongoing doctors’ protest, Rao assured that emergency services will continue to operate across all hospitals, although outpatient departments (OPDs) will be closed on Saturday. He acknowledged the potential inconvenience caused by the protest but expressed understanding of the doctors’ intentions. “The protest is driven by legitimate concerns, and we must ensure that the workplace remains free of fear,” Rao added.
