K’taka Govt Cancelling Ration Cards Over Guarantee Scheme Failures, Alleges Pralhad Joshi 

Hubballi: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has alleged that the Karnataka Congress government is canceling a significant number of APL and BPL ration cards due to its inability to manage the financial burden of its guarantee schemes. The minister raised concerns while speaking to the media in Hubballi on Sunday, highlighting the plight of the poor and criticizing the state’s governance.

Joshi claimed that despite the Central government ensuring robust food security, including providing 5 kg of free rice per person to BPL cardholders, the state is failing to uphold its promises. “The state government appears to be canceling ration cards to balance its budget for guarantee schemes. This must not result in injustice to the poor,” he said, adding that he would seek clarity from the Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister, K.H. Muniyappa.

Central Government’s Contribution 

Joshi emphasized the Centre’s significant efforts in ensuring food security through the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which provides free food grains to 75% of rural and 50% of urban populations. “The Centre spends ₹2.11 lakh crore annually on food security. Despite this, why is Karnataka struggling to manage its ration cardholders?” he questioned.

Guarantee Schemes Under Fire 

The minister criticized the state’s flagship guarantee schemes, accusing the Congress government of announcing poorly planned programs. “They promised 10 kg of rice but are only distributing the 5 kg supplied by the Centre. Even the state’s share of costs is not being covered,” he remarked.

Public Services Disrupted 

Joshi also pointed out operational issues with the Shakti Scheme, claiming it has reduced bus services on many routes and delayed salaries for drivers and conductors. He further alleged that other promises, such as the Gruha Lakshmi Scheme and unemployment benefits under the Yuva Nidhi Scheme, have yet to reach many beneficiaries.

Rising Prices Add to Concerns 

Joshi criticized the government for increasing electricity tariffs, fuel prices, and costs of essential commodities like milk and alcohol. “While they boast about guarantees, the burden of price hikes is being passed on to the people,” he said, adding that the guarantees have become ineffective amidst the rising cost of living.

The Karnataka government has not yet responded to the allegations. Meanwhile, the debate over the state’s ability to deliver on its promises continues to gain momentum.
