Hubballi, July 08 2025: Renowned surgeon and academician Dr Ishwar R Hosamani has taken charge as the new Director of Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMC&RI), Hubballi. An alumnus of the institute, Dr Hosamani has held various pivotal positions over the years — from lecturer and professor to Head of the Department of General Surgery and Principal — before assuming his current leadership role.

With decades of experience in both clinical and academic realms, Dr Hosamani steps into this position at a critical juncture, bringing with him a strong vision for transformation and inclusive development. In a candid conversation with HubliExpress, he outlined his roadmap for addressing immediate challenges and long-term goals to elevate the institute’s stature in the healthcare ecosystem.

Streamlining the Services

Dr Hosamani emphasized that streamlining hospital services is his top priority. The institute currently handles an overwhelming outpatient load, often exceeding 2,000 patients a day. “Reducing waiting time for consultations, investigations, and imaging is a major challenge,” he said. To address this, plans are underway to increase the number of counters for OPD registration and medicine distribution. Additionally, optimizing the deployment of existing medical staff is being actively explored to ensure quicker consultations and efficient patient care.

Shortage of Manpower, Fund Crunch

Admitting the pressing issue of manpower shortage and budgetary limitations, Dr Hosamani revealed that the government has permitted contract-based appointments to temporarily bridge the gap. He assured that the administration is in constant dialogue with authorities to resolve these critical concerns and strengthen the institute’s human resource base.

Demonstrating a forward-thinking approach, Dr Hosamani announced plans to introduce exclusive OPDs for geriatric and diabetic patients to ensure focused and specialized care. Furthermore, he envisions the establishment of a dedicated comprehensive pediatric and neonatology unit, modeled after the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health. This proposed super-specialty department would integrate neonatology, pediatrics, and allied branches under one roof, enhancing care for the most vulnerable patient groups.

On Kidney Transplantation

Dr Hosamani noted that while KMC&RI has successfully performed over 30 kidney transplants in the past, the service had temporarily halted over the past two months. However, he confirmed that transplant surgeries—both cadaver and live—will resume shortly, with a target of conducting at least two to three procedures per month going forward.

Additionally, to address the long-standing issue of unavailability of surgeons for arteriovenous fistula procedures in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, a plastic surgeon has been assigned, and services are expected to recommence soon.

 Enhancing Infrastructure and Education

A new critical care block is currently under construction near the emergency department, which is expected to significantly bolster the hospital’s capacity to manage acute and life-threatening cases. On the academic front, the institute aims to increase the MBBS student intake from the existing 200 to 250, thereby expanding educational opportunities for future healthcare professionals.
