Kempegowda Airport Commits to Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050, Earns Prestigious ACI Level 5 Certification
Bengaluru: Kempegowda International Airport, operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first airport in Asia to earn Airports Council International’s (ACI) prestigious Level 5 accreditation, officials announced on Friday.
Bangalore Airport has successfully reduced its Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by an impressive 95.6%, marking the highest emission reduction by any Indian airport. This achievement comes seven years ahead of its original 2030 target, with the accreditation becoming effective from May 5, 2024.
“BLR Airport has made remarkable progress in its journey towards decarbonisation, setting new standards by transitioning to 100% renewable electricity and implementing initiatives focused on sustainable mobility and green infrastructure,” BIAL stated. To further offset its remaining emissions, the airport has secured ACI-approved carbon credits from verified carbon removal projects.
BIAL’s Managing Director and CEO, Hari Marar, expressed pride in this accomplishment, saying, “Being the first airport in Asia to achieve ACI’s Level 5 accreditation and leading the way in emission elimination is a significant milestone. Achieving Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions seven years ahead of schedule is a testament to BLR Airport’s strong commitment to sustainability. This achievement sets a new standard for us and reaffirms our dedication to building a greener future.”
Looking ahead, BLR Airport’s commitment extends beyond Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The airport is aligning with the stringent requirements of ACI’s Level 5 carbon accreditation program, with a goal to achieve Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050, including Scope 3 emissions.
