Italy has formally pulled out of China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, putting an end to its involvement over four years after being the only G7 nation to join.

The decision, communicated to Beijing recently, underscores Italy’s aim to keep diplomatic channels open. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a vocal critic, saw the initiative as a means for Beijing to wield political influence, offering little advantage to Italy.

Although specifics of the withdrawal remain undisclosed, it precedes the automatic renewal set for March 2024. Italy’s move reflects concerns about the initiative’s impact on debt and China’s growing global influence. Despite China‘s claim of broad international participation, Italy’s departure reveals skepticism among Western nations, with Washington expressing concerns about potential military implications linked to the initiative.
