Interim Government Takes Over in Bangladesh as Hasina Departs for UK

The Indian government has granted former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina temporary refuge following the collapse of her administration, according to media reports.

During her stay, India will provide full logistical support as Hasina seeks asylum in the UK, as reported by Daily Sun.

This temporary approval in India is pending her relocation to Britain.

Sheikh Hasina stepped down on Monday amidst unprecedented anti-government protests and is currently en route to London via India.

As of now, the UK government has not confirmed whether it will grant political asylum to the former Prime Minister, Daily Sun reported.

Hasina is seeking asylum in the UK, accompanied by her sister Rehana, a UK citizen.

Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the “Father of Bangladesh,” and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a member of the British Parliament for the Labour Party.

Indian government sources have stated that New Delhi is closely monitoring the rapid developments in Dhaka.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced Hasina’s resignation and the establishment of an interim government.

“I’m assuming full responsibility for the country. Please cooperate,” he stated in a televised address.

The Army Chief mentioned that he had consulted with political leaders and informed them that the Army would be responsible for maintaining law and order.

Over the past two days, more than 100 people have died in protests against the Hasina government.
