An Indian tech professional earning close to Rs 80 lakh annually in Europe is contemplating a shift to Bengaluru, igniting a spirited debate online. The individual, who has been working in northern Europe for over five years, has received a job offer in Bengaluru offering Rs 50 lakh CTC, significantly lower than their current salary. However, they are considering the move, citing better purchasing power and greater market potential in India.

In a post on Reddit, the tech professional questioned their decision, asking, “Am I making a mistake?” They explained, “I’ve worked in northern Europe for the past five years, earning around Rs 80 lakh CTC. Now, I’ve got a job offer in Bengaluru with a salary of Rs 50 lakh CTC. I’m thinking of accepting it because I feel India offers better purchasing power and larger market opportunities. But my family is urging me not to move, worried about the lower quality of life in India. What’s your opinion?”

The post has since garnered diverse reactions, with many users advising against the move. One commenter remarked, “If you’re ready to give up job security and embrace a toxic work culture, then move to India. In the EU, labor laws make layoffs difficult. In India, companies are laying off employees left, right, and center. Unless you have strong family reasons, there’s no compelling reason to return.”

Another user pointed out, “Just Rs 50 lakh? Don’t forget Nirmala Tai will take 30% of that in taxes in no time. Plus, Bengaluru’s rent is skyrocketing, and we’re heading toward a dry winter with ongoing water shortages. And let’s not even talk about the BBMP, which charges more but delivers nothing. Your Rs 80 lakh may not be much abroad, but you’ll still live a better life than someone earning Rs 1 crore here in India.”

This debate continues to unfold, reflecting the broader conversation around the pros and cons of returning to India for professionals living abroad.
