IMA Cancels Membership of Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has revoked the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, following concerns about his handling of a serious incident involving a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered on August 9.
The decision, made by a disciplinary committee chaired by National President Dr. RV Asokan, was prompted by grievances from the victim’s parents regarding Ghosh’s lack of empathy and sensitivity. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) had also expressed concerns about Ghosh’s affiliation with the IMA, arguing it undermined the organization’s integrity and ethical standards.
FAIMA urged the IMA to revoke his membership until the conclusion of ongoing legal proceedings, emphasizing the need to maintain public trust in the medical profession. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated lie detection tests on Ghosh and others as part of its investigation into the incident and alleged financial irregularities at the college.
