ICC Cricket World Cup: New Zealand Triumphs, Pakistan Knocked Out of Semi-final Contention
Bengaluru: In an almost one sided match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, New Zealand emerged victorious against Sri Lanka in the ICC Cricket World Cup, winning by 5 wickets and knocking Pakistan out of the semi-final race.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, New Zealand’s bowlers, spearheaded by Trent Boult, put up a commendable performance. Kusal Perera’s explosive innings of 51 runs off 28 balls provided the initial momentum for Sri Lanka, but a disciplined bowling effort from the Kiwis restricted them to a total of 171 in 46.4 overs.
Trent Boult was the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand, claiming three crucial wickets for 37 runs. Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, and Rachin Ravindra also contributed with wickets.
Chasing the target of 172, New Zealand displayed resilience in their batting. Devon Conway’s impressive 45 and vital contributions from Rachin Ravindra (42) and Daryl Mitchell (43) guided them to victory. Despite some late wickets, Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 17 ensured New Zealand reached the target with 26 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana showcased a spirited bowling effort, but it wasn’t enough to defend their total. Angelo Mathews contributed with the ball, dismissing Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell.
With this victory, New Zealand secures a crucial win in the ICC Cricket World Cup, setting the stage for more exciting clashes in the tournament.
New Zealand may play against India in the semifinal on November 16 at Mumbai’ Wankhede Stadium, if Pakistan fails to secure very huge margin victory against England in their last league match of this tournament.
