Hubballi Sees Another Digital Arrest Case: Retired Teacher Loses Rs 46 Lakh
Hubballi: Cyber frauds, especially ‘digital arrest’ scams are on the rise in Hubballi and the city has seen its fourth major case in just two weeks. This time a 77-year-old retired teacher from Navanagar fell prey to cyber fraud and lost Rs 46 Lakh.
According to the police, the retired teacher received a WhatsApp call on October 22 from a person claiming to be a CBI officer. The scammer told her that suspicious transactions had been detected in her bank account and a PMLA case had been filed against her in the Supreme Court and an arrest warrant had been issued. He threatened that she could be arrested anytime.
She was scared by these claims and was convinced to send money saying it would help her to prevent her arrest and help in the investigation. She was told to stay online and not to discuss with anyone. She was so scared that she followed the scammer’s instructions and sent Rs 46 Lakh to multiple accounts provided by the fraudster through RTGS.
Now she has approached the cyber crime police. Investigation is on to identify the culprits and recover the money.
