Hubballi Doctors Perform First-of-Its-Kind Micro Surgery for Lymphedema
Hubballi, EXPRESS News: Breast cancer, the most common cancer among women in India, often requires treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy depending on the stage of the disease. While these treatments save lives, they can sometimes lead to complications. One such condition, lymphedema, affects 15–20% of breast cancer survivors, causing swelling in the arm following mastectomy.
For the first time in Hubballi, doctors at Lifeline Hospital have successfully performed an innovative surgery called S-LYMPHA (Simplified Lymphatic Microsurgical Preventing Healing Approach) to address this issue. The patient, a 42-year old teacher.
This advanced procedure involves connecting lymphatic vessels to veins through microsurgery during the mastectomy itself. By doing this, doctors aim to prevent the buildup of lymphatic fluid, which causes lymphedema.
The groundbreaking surgery was performed by a team led by Dr. Vishwas Pai, an oncosurgeon, and Dr. Arun Jeedi, a plastic surgeon with support from anesthesiologists Dr. Lodaya and Dr. Vrinda.
“Lymphedema can be a lifelong challenge for breast cancer survivors. By offering S-LYMPHA, we can prevent this complication and improve the quality of life for patients,” said Dr. Pai.
This advanced surgical option is now available in Hubballi-Dharwad, marking a significant milestone in cancer care in the region. Lifeline Hospital continues to pave the way for innovative and patient-centric treatments.
Survivors and their families can now access cutting-edge solutions closer to home, offering hope and improved outcomes in the fight against breast cancer.
