Hubballi, May 14, 2025: In a firm move to maintain public safety and discourage anti-social behavior, the Hubballi-Dharwad Police have launched a crackdown on rowdy sheeters who have been using social media platforms to glorify their criminal activities and spread fear in society.
Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, addressing the media on Wednesday, revealed that over 58 individuals have been booked in more than 25 cases following careful surveillance of over 700 social media accounts. The action comes as part of a larger effort to curb online content that promotes violence, intimidates the public, or potentially influences the youth in a negative direction.
“Some of these individuals have posted videos and messages glorifying their criminal background, while others have had their followers share such content. In some instances, rowdy sheeters were seen celebrating birthdays in the middle of public roads or posting messages that could create fear among the public,” said the Commissioner.
He warned that such posts not only disrupt peace but may also lead young, impressionable minds toward dangerous and unlawful behavior. “We will not tolerate any attempt to misuse social media to glamorize crime. These activities pose a threat to the social fabric, and we are taking preventive action to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens,” he added.
The police have been particularly vigilant in monitoring content across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Dedicated social media monitoring cells have been tasked with identifying inflammatory posts, provocative comments, and content that could incite violence or unrest.
Commissioner Shashikumar made it clear that the monitoring will continue and action will be taken against any individual found misusing social media platforms to spread fear, provoke violence, or promote anti-social conduct.
