Washington, USA: Neena Singh made history as the first Sikh and Indian-American woman to take the oath as Mayor of Montgomery Township in New Jersey. The swearing-in ceremony, conducted by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman during the Montgomery Township Reorganisation Meeting on January 4, marked a significant milestone in Singh’s political career.

Having resided in Montgomery for 24 years, Singh received unanimous support from her fellow Township Committee members in her selection as Mayor. Expressing her gratitude, she remarked, “It’s an enormous privilege to be sworn in by trailblazer Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman as the first elected Sikh woman Mayor in New Jersey and the first Indian-American woman Mayor.”

Singh, who previously served as Deputy Mayor and Township Committeewoman, outlined her priorities for 2024, focusing on public safety and health. She emphasized the importance of community service and reflected on the diversity of Montgomery, stating, “I strongly believe we all have a responsibility to give back, and I am blessed to do so in a town that reflects America’s diversity.”

Nominated by outgoing Mayor Devra Keenan and committee-woman Patricia Taylor Todd, Singh’s commitment to public service is further evident in her role as an executive officer at STAND Central NJ, a grassroots non-profit. Her work involves engaging and educating voters while empowering them to participate in the democratic process.

Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman praised Singh’s dedication to social justice, economic opportunity, and human rights, expressing confidence that she will bring her experience and passion to benefit the township during her term as Mayor.

In her new position, Singh will preside over Township Committee meetings, with the authority to appoint subcommittees with the Committee’s consent. Additionally, she holds the power to issue proclamations related to holidays and events in the township and exercise ceremonial duties.

Indian-American New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal congratulated Singh through a video message, hailing her as a “role model” for South Asian girls across the state. Vincent P Barragan, named as Deputy Mayor, expressed pride in serving alongside a diverse team of individuals.
