Hezbollah Fires Over 320 Rockets at Israel, Claims Attack in Retaliation for Commander’s Death

Israel has launched extensive airstrikes across southern Lebanon, described as a pre-emptive action against Hezbollah. This follows Hezbollah’s announcement of launching over 320 rockets and drones in retaliation for the killing of its commander, Fouad Shukur, last month. The militant group claims its attacks target significant Israeli military sites, including the Iron Dome defense system.

Tensions are escalating, with fears of a broader conflict involving the U.S., Iran, and regional militant groups. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acted on intelligence indicating an imminent attack from Hezbollah, emphasizing that these strikes were necessary to safeguard Israeli civilians. IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari noted that “dozens” of Israeli warplanes were involved in the operation, which resulted in some strikes reportedly causing minimal damage in Israel.

In response, air raid sirens were activated across northern Israel, leading to temporary disruptions at Ben-Gurion Airport. Meanwhile, reports indicated at least one fatality from an airstrike on a vehicle in the Lebanese town of Khiam. Despite the conflict’s intensity, Hezbollah has stated it will cease hostilities if a ceasefire is established in Gaza, where ongoing negotiations are being facilitated by Egypt.

U.S. President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation, with senior officials maintaining constant communication with Israeli leaders. This development heightens concerns that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza could spiral into a wider regional conflict, especially after targeted strikes have already impacted key leaders from both factions.
