Here’s Why Joe Biden Withdrew from the 2024 Race

Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden surprised many by announcing his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns over his health and a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump. Initially adamant about continuing his campaign, the 81-year-old revealed his decision on July 21 through a social media post while recovering from COVID-19 at his beach house in Delaware.

In a recent interview with CBS, Biden elaborated on his reasons for stepping aside, reflecting on his role in the 2020 election. “When I first ran, I saw myself as a transitional president,” he shared. “My age is something I can barely acknowledge, it’s difficult for me to even say.”

Biden emphasized the critical need to prevent Trump from returning to office. “Being president is a tremendous honor, but I have a duty to the country,” he stated. “The most important task is clear – we must, we absolutely must, stop Trump.”

Following his withdrawal, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. Harris is expected to be officially nominated at the party’s upcoming national convention in Chicago later this month.

When questioned about the likelihood of a peaceful transition of power in January 2025, Biden expressed doubt, particularly if Trump were to lose. “I have no confidence in a peaceful transfer if Trump loses. He means every word he says, and we can’t afford to dismiss him,” Biden warned, referencing Trump’s previous comments about a “bloodbath” and claims of a “stolen election.” He added, “Loving your country isn’t about only accepting outcomes when you win.”
