What are the neurological symptoms that you should not ignore?

Certain symptoms are minor and one can ignore them, however, some neurological symptoms should not be ignored.

 Symptoms for which you should seek emergency neurology consultation:

  1. Sudden severe headache (the worst headache of lifetime),
  2. Unexplained drowsiness,
  3. Loss of consciousness- either short-duration or persisting,
  4. Fits (convulsions),
  5. Sudden onset face, arm or leg weakness on one side of body,
  6. Inability to speak or understand spoken words,
  7. Inability to see (from one or both eyes), or one half of the visual field,
  8. Sudden onset slurred speech, swallowing difficulty, with or without dizziness,
  9. Sudden onset imbalance while walking,
  10. Weakness of both legs, or weakness of both arms & legs,
  11. Severe headache, fever, and vomiting.

Symptoms for which routine neurology consultation is advisable:

  1. Headache on and off, or severe enough to interfere with daily activities,
  2. Forgetfulness,
  3. Slowness of movements,
  4. Shaking (tremors) of hands,
  5. Neck or low back pain, with radiating pain to arms or legs,
  6. Tingling, burning or pain of both feet,
  7. Episodic sharp shooting pain on one side of face,
  8. Drooping of eyelids, double vision,
  9. Weakness of muscles of legs or arms,
  10. Tingling, numbness or pain of one hand,
  11. Burning sensation, tingling of thigh region,
  12. Twitching of eyelids, or facial muscles,
  13. Imbalance while walking.
