New Delhi, India: Consumers across India can expect faster and easier access to electricity connections and rooftop solar installations, thanks to recent amendments approved by the government. These changes, announced by Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R.K. Singh, aim to empower consumers and simplify processes.

Key Highlights:

  • Faster Connections: Timelines for obtaining new connections have been drastically reduced: 3 days in metro areas, 7 days in municipalities, and 15 days in rural areas (except hilly terrain).
  • Simplified Rooftop Solar: Technical feasibility studies for systems up to 10kW are no longer required, and distribution companies must bear the cost of strengthening systems up to 5kW. Connection timelines are also reduced to 15 days.
  • EV Charging: Separate connections can now be obtained for electric vehicle charging stations, supporting India’s carbon reduction goals.
  • Consumer Choice in Multi-Storied Buildings: Residents can choose between individual connections or a single-point connection with transparent billing and separate metering for common areas and backup power.
  • Improved Dispute Resolution: Distribution companies must install additional meters within 5 days of consumer complaints regarding inaccurate readings.

Minister Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to consumer empowerment. These amendments, he stated, build upon the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, and further enhance transparency, choice, and access to electricity services.

Impact:

These changes are expected to benefit consumers by:

  • Reducing waiting times for new connections and solar installations.
  • Making rooftop solar more accessible and affordable.
  • Facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles.
  • Promoting transparency and fairness in billing practices.
  • Providing a faster and more efficient dispute resolution mechanism.
