Foreign National Flees Australia After Allegedly Burning Baby with Boiling Coffee
A foreign national accused of pouring boiling coffee on a nine-month-old boy in Brisbane last month fled Australia just 12 hours before authorities could confirm his identity. The incident, which took place at Stones Corner on August 27, left baby Luka with serious burns and requiring multiple surgeries. The boy’s father reported that Luka is in “good spirits” as he recovers in the hospital.
Detective Inspector Paul Dalton revealed that the 33-year-old suspect left the country using his own passport on August 31, after being in New South Wales on August 28. A warrant for grievous bodily harm has been issued, potentially leading to a life sentence. Police described the act as “almost like an ambush” and released CCTV footage of the suspect.
The boy’s parents expressed devastation over the suspect’s escape, fearing prolonged delays in achieving justice for their son. They shared their ongoing anxiety and emotional distress since the attack. Despite the lack of a clear motive for the assault, Detective Dalton noted that the suspect appeared to have been aware of police tactics, complicating the investigation.
Police have conducted interviews with the suspect’s former colleagues and are considering sending detectives overseas to continue the search. With 30 detectives on the case, Dalton emphasized their commitment to locating the suspect and urged the public to come forward with any information related to the case.
