Kolkata: The West Bengal government is set to discontinue the historic tram service in Kolkata, which has been an integral part of the city’s transportation network for over 150 years. Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty announced that all tram routes would be phased out, with the exception of a single stretch between Esplanade and Maidan, preserved for tourism.
This decision aims to reduce traffic congestion caused by slow-moving trams, but it has sparked significant backlash from the public and heritage advocates.

Introduced in 1873, Kolkata’s trams symbolize the city’s identity. While Chakraborty acknowledged the emotional ties to the service, many residents took to social media to express their sorrow over the loss of this cultural landmark, lamenting the end of an era and criticizing the government’s failure to modernize this eco-friendly transport option.
