Collins Dictionary Names ‘Brat’ as 2024 Word of the Year

Collins Dictionary has named “brat” as its 2024 Word of the Year, following the success of Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, which embodies a confident, independent, and carefree attitude. The term gained popularity through the phrase “brat summer,” representing a lifestyle and cultural trend that resonated with many people around the world.
Traditionally, “brat” refers to a child, often implying bad behavior. Collins Dictionary noted that the word became one of the most discussed in 2024. Other notable words for this year include “era,” inspired by Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, “anti-tourism,” reflecting the movement against mass tourism, and “delulu,” which means having unrealistic expectations.
Additional shortlisted words include “brainrot,” caused by consuming low-quality online content, “looksmaxxing,” about enhancing physical appearance, and “romantasy,” a mix of romantic fiction and fantasy. Collins managing director Alex Beecroft remarked that this year’s list, influenced by Generation Z and Alpha, reflects a playful and youthful spirit, making it the most “brat” Word of the Year list ever. Last year’s Word of the Year was “AI” for artificial intelligence.
