Beijing: China and the Maldives strengthened their relationship as President Mohamed Muizzu visited Beijing, leading to the agreement of a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.” Chinese President Xi Jinping referred to Muizzu as an “old friend” during the visit, emphasizing the historic opportunity for enhanced relations.

Muizzu, who assumed office in November, has advocated for reducing India’s influence in the Maldives, terming it a threat to sovereignty. Despite being heavily indebted to Beijing, the Maldives government has sought Chinese investment opportunities and asked Indian military personnel to leave.

China’s move to upgrade ties with the Maldives aligns with its regional influence strategy, particularly in areas where India has seen neighboring nations like Sri Lanka gravitate towards China. The Maldives, owing $1.37 billion to China, has signed “20 key agreements” during the visit, showcasing the deepening economic ties.

President Xi expressed China’s support for the Maldives’ sovereignty and independence while emphasizing cooperation in state governance. The World Bank has cautioned against over-reliance on China, citing potential risks due to the build-up of sovereign exposure during the pandemic. Xi also proposed increasing direct flights between the two countries, which could boost the Maldives’ tourism sector, constituting a significant portion of its economic growth in 2022.
