CBI Granted Permission for Polygraph Tests in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case
In Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has received court approval to conduct polygraph tests on the former principal and four doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital linked to the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. The incident occurred on August 9, after the victim reportedly had dinner with the doctors before her body was discovered the following morning.
The Sealdah ACJM court granted permission for the tests at the CBI’s request. This decision follows a directive from the Supreme Court, which urged the lower court to act promptly on the application. While polygraph results are not considered confessions and are inadmissible in court, they may provide investigative leads.
The Supreme Court also scrutinized the West Bengal government regarding a 14-hour delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR). The main suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, was arrested shortly after the crime and has been previously questioned by the CBI.
Investigations reveal that the victim spoke with her parents around 11:15 PM on August 8, mentioning she would have dinner soon. She had dinner with the doctors around 12:30 AM and went to sleep in a seminar room by 2:30 AM. The incident is believed to have occurred between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM, with her body found at approximately 9:45 AM. The CBI has already conducted over 75 hours of questioning with Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal.
