Apple and Nvidia Reportedly Eye Investments in OpenAI
OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, is preparing for a major funding round that could push its valuation beyond $100 billion. According to The Wall Street Journal, two of the world’s largest tech giants, Apple and Nvidia, are reportedly interested in participating in this round. Microsoft, already a significant investor in OpenAI, remains one of the key backers.
Apple’s interest in OpenAI is not unexpected. At its annual developer conference in June 2024, Apple introduced a series of AI-driven features under the banner of Apple Intelligence, with some of these innovations set to be powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Earlier this year, Apple senior executive Phil Schiller was expected to join OpenAI’s board as a non-voting observer. However, Schiller opted not to take the role due to concerns related to antitrust regulations.
Nvidia’s potential investment also aligns with its existing relationship with OpenAI. As a crucial supplier of chips that power OpenAI’s foundational models, Nvidia’s involvement would further solidify this partnership.
The report also notes that Thrive Capital is leading the upcoming funding round, which could elevate OpenAI’s valuation to over $100 billion.
