Another Volcanic Eruption Hits Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula
A volcano erupted near Grindavík in southwest Iceland, less than a month after a previous eruption. Beginning on Sunday morning, the event prompted town evacuations, with barriers built to prevent lava flow proving ineffective.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported a crack in the defenses, and lava is advancing towards Grindavík. The civil protection agency raised the alert level to “emergency.”
No lives are at risk, but infrastructure may be threatened. This marks the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021. Iceland’s geological positioning makes it prone to seismic and volcanic activity between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
