American Journalist Evan Gershkovich Faces Extended Detention in Moscow
Moscow, Russia: A Moscow court has extended the custody of American reporter Evan Gershkovich, a Moscow correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, until January 30, heightening concerns about the fate of the journalist.
Gershkovich has been detained since March, facing espionage charges for allegedly attempting to obtain secret information. The Wall Street Journal condemned the continued detention, labeling it a “brazen and outrageous attack” on the free press.
The United States has declared Gershkovich “wrongfully detained,” accusing Russia of engaging in “hostage diplomacy.” Gershkovich is the first Western reporter jailed on spying charges in Russia since the Soviet era.
