14,000+ E-Buses, 88,500 Charging Sites: Here’s What the PM E-Drive Scheme Offers
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the new PM E-Drive Scheme, replacing the long-running FAME programme, to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. With an allocated budget of Rs 10,900 crore over the next two years, the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) aims to further push India’s transition towards greener transportation, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Under this ambitious initiative, the government plans to support the deployment of 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers, 3.16 lakh electric three-wheelers, and 14,028 electric buses across the country. The scheme also emphasizes building infrastructure for EVs, with a focus on creating 88,500 charging stations to facilitate a more seamless EV experience.
The PM E-DRIVE Scheme introduces Rs 3,679 crore worth of demand incentives to encourage the widespread adoption of electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other upcoming electric vehicle technologies. In addition, Rs 4,391 crore has been set aside to help state transport agencies procure electric buses, while Rs 500 crore will go towards deploying e-ambulances for better patient transport. Another Rs 500 crore has been allocated to promote the use of electric trucks, further broadening the scheme’s impact on sustainable mobility.
The FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) Scheme, which was originally launched in April 2015 and continued until March, has now been succeeded by PM E-DRIVE to take India’s EV revolution to the next level.
