In Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri, a girl was sexually assaulted, and at least a dozen others faced sexual abuse at what was later revealed to be a fraudulent National Cadet Corps (NCC) camp, police confirmed on Monday, NDTV reported.

Eleven individuals, including the camp’s organizer, the school principal, two teachers, and a correspondent, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Investigations uncovered that the private school did not have an NCC unit, and a group approached the school’s management, falsely claiming that hosting the camp would qualify the school for one, according to police reports.

The school failed to perform proper background checks before allowing the group to organize the camp. A total of 41 students, including 17 girls, participated in the three-day event held earlier this month.

The girls were housed in the school auditorium on the first floor, while the boys stayed on the ground floor. No teachers were assigned to oversee the camp’s activities. According to the girls’ accounts, they were lured out of the auditorium and sexually assaulted.

“The school authorities were aware of the sexual misconduct but chose to cover it up rather than report it to the police. The students were allegedly instructed not to take the incidents seriously,” District Superintendent of Police P Thangadurai told NDTV.

Police are also investigating whether the group behind the fake NCC camp has conducted similar operations at other schools.

The accused have been charged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Medical examinations of the victims have been carried out, and the District Child Welfare Committee has initiated appropriate actions.
