The upcoming film ” The Kerala Story” directed by Sudipto Sen has caused quite a stir, even before its trailer release. The movie, which showcases the stories of Hindu and Christian women in Kerala who were allegedly deceived and forced to convert to Islam and join ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria, has courted controversy due to its claim that 32,000 women from Kerala were forcibly converted and recruited to ISIS. Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and starring Adah Sharma in the lead role, the trailer of the film was released on April 26th, 2023, which further fueled the debate.
A journalist from Tamil Nadu filed a petition with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Kerala, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, requesting the board to ban the film unless the director and producer provided evidence to confirm the accuracy of the information presented in the trailer. Kerala Congress leader VD Satheesan also demanded a ban on the film, citing misinformation.
Despite the controversy, the movie is set to release on May 5th. However, according to MathruBhumi, Kerala DGP Anil Kant has directed the Thiruvananthapuram Police Commissioner to register an FIR based on the complaint filed with the Kerala chief minister’s office.
