During an election rally in Annigeri on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the BJP government’s decision to abolish the four percent quota for Muslims in Karnataka.
He criticized the Congress party’s promise to restore the Muslim reservation if elected to power in the upcoming assembly polls. Shah emphasized that the BJP government had increased reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Vokkaligas, and Lingayats after abolishing the Muslim reservation.
He highlighted the recent increase in SC reservations from 15% to 17% by the Basavaraj Bommai government. Furthermore, Shah questioned the Congress party’s stance and asked whose quota would be reduced if the Muslim reservation was restored. He noted that the BJP government had divided the four percent among Vokkaligas and Lingayats before eliminating it.
Shah also urged voters to choose a “double-engine government” over a “reverse gear government” (Congress government) in the upcoming election. He claimed that if the BJP wins in the 2023 assembly election, it would pave the way for the return of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government in 2024.
The Union Home Minister lauded the government’s efforts to address the people’s and farmers’ aspirations. He contrasted the BJP’s performance with that of the previous Congress government, stating that they had failed to resolve the Kalasa Banduri Mahadayi scheme despite being in power at the center, in Karnataka, and in Goa.
Shah said it was Prime Minister Modi’s government that resolved the issue. Lastly, he appealed to voters in Navalgund and Gadag constituencies to support Shankar Patil Munenakoppa and Anil Menasinkai, respectively.
