Powerful earthquake struck Morocco, leaving more than 800 people dead and causing extensive damage from the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech.
Rescue efforts were hindered by blocked roads to remote mountain villages most affected. The magnitude-6.8 quake was the strongest in Morocco in 120 years, causing the collapse of buildings and walls in historic stone cities ill-equipped for such seismic events.
Experts expect the death toll to rise into the thousands as aftershocks are likely to follow. The famous Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech and the UNESCO World Heritage site’s red walls sustained damage. Rescue operations continued through the night, with authorities mobilizing aid efforts to the affected areas. Roads to the mountain region were congested and blocked with debris.
