During the celebration of Ram Navami, a tragic incident occurred when the roof of a stepwell at Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Indore collapsed, causing the death of 36 people and injuring many others.
The temple, located in Sneh Nagar, is under the management of a private trust. According to reports, the residents had filed complaints to the Indore Municipal Corporation about the temple being built on a stepwell in an encroached park, but no action was taken.
A havan was being conducted on the concrete slab covering the stepwell, which also served as the platform of the temple, when the roof collapsed due to the weight of 30-40 people. The concrete slab could not hold the weight, causing the devotees to fall into the 40-foot-deep stepwell.
The NDRF and SDRF teams are still conducting rescue operations, which have been ongoing for 18 hours.
